Helianthus annuus L.
A fungal disease of sunflower caused by the pathogen Septoria helianthi, characterized by angular leaf spots containing black pycnidia.

The causal agent of Septoria leaf spot in sunflower is the imperfect fungus Septoria helianthi Ellis et Kellerm. The disease manifests in the second half of the growing season, starting on the lower leaves and spreading upwards. Irregularly shaped yellow or brown spots, limited by leaf veins, form on the leaf blades.
The most important diagnostic feature of the infection is the formation of small black dots—pycnidia—in the center of the spots. Under high humidity, the affected tissue may fall out, leading to leaf perforation. Severe development of the infection causes premature drying of the leaf canopy and a reduction in the plant's photosynthetic activity.
At present, no specific races of the pathogen Septoria helianthi have been identified, and the resistance of modern sunflower hybrids and varieties is characterized as a complex trait of field resistance without linkage to specific genetic loci.
