Septoria Leaf Blotch of Rye

Secale cereale L.

A fungal disease of rye caused by the specialized pathogen Septoria secalis. It manifests as narrow leaf spots where pycnidia develop, and it is capable of infecting all above-ground plant organs.

In the reference 26 varieties crop Rye, where this is mentioned in the description.

The primary causal agent of Septoria leaf blotch of rye is the fungus Septoria secalis Prill. et Del., which belongs to the family Sphaerioidaceae. The sexual stage of this pathogen currently remains unknown. Concomitant pathogens that infect rye may also include the fungi Zymoseptoria tritici and Stagonospora nodorum, which have a broader host range among cereal crops.

Disease symptoms are characterized by the appearance of narrow, linear or oblong spots on the leaves, located between the veins. The color of the affected areas varies from yellow-grey to brown, often with a dark or reddish margin. A diagnostic sign is the formation of small black dots—pycnidia—within the bleached areas of the spots as the disease progresses.

Unlike wheat Septoria leaf blotch, information regarding the intraspecific structure of the pathogen Septoria secalis and specific rye resistance genes is currently virtually non-existent. Breeding efforts to develop resistant varieties are based on the phenotypic evaluation of material under disease-pressure conditions, as the genetic mechanisms of resistance to this pathogen have not been sufficiently studied.
