The causal agent of Septoria leaf spot is the fungus Septoria ribis Desm., which has an ascigerous stage known as Mycosphaerella grosulariae. The disease primarily affects leaves, and less frequently young shoots, petioles, and peduncles of gooseberry. On the leaf surface, circular or angular brown spots with a diameter of 2–3 mm form, which eventually turn white in the center while retaining a dark border.

A characteristic diagnostic feature is the presence of black dots (pycnidia) forming in the center of the light-colored spots. In cases of mass infection, the spots coalesce, causing yellowing and early shedding of foliage, which significantly reduces the winter hardiness and yield of the crop. Specific resistance genes in gooseberry against this pathogen have not yet been described; breeding is conducted through the selection of resistant cultivars and the use of wild species.
