Winter Hardiness of Gooseberry

The assessment of gooseberry winter hardiness is based on field observations and artificial shoot freezing methods. Under field conditions, the degree of freezing of buds, cambium tissues, and pith is evaluated on a scoring scale, where indices up to 2.0 points correspond to good variety adaptation. Varieties are classified as highly winter-hardy, moderately winter-hardy, and non-winter-hardy depending on their ability to endure severe winters.

The winter hardiness of the crop is closely related to its phenological characteristics, as early dormancy release and early flowering make the plant vulnerable to late spring frosts. The ability to rapidly regenerate shoots after damage is a critical factor for plantation longevity. The trait is influenced by environmental conditions: an excess of nitrogen in the second half of summer delays wood maturation, and the presence of diseases, such as powdery mildew, reduces the overall stress tolerance of the bush.
