Gooseberry anthracnose

Ribes uva-crispa L.

A fungal disease caused by the pathogen Pseudopeziza ribis f. grossularia, manifesting primarily as brown spots on gooseberry leaves. Severe infection leads to premature defoliation, impaired bud formation, and reduced winter hardiness.

The causative agent of the disease is the ascomycete fungus Pseudopeziza ribis Kleb., represented by the specialized form Pseudopeziza ribis f. grossularia. The infection manifests at the end of the flowering period with the appearance of small, approximately 1 mm, brown spots of angular-rounded shapes, restricted by leaf veins. In the centers of these spots, shiny black conidial pustules form, which release spores upon rupturing the epidermis. Specific brown ulcers may occur on petioles, young shoots, and berries.

In gooseberry breeding for anthracnose resistance, no specific resistance genes have been identified. The primary defense mechanism of resistant cultivars is the plant's ability to inhibit the parasite's sporulation process. Selection of cultivars is conducted primarily against a high natural or artificial infectious background.
