Gooseberry waxy bloom

A natural layer of cuticular wax on the surface of gooseberry fruits, used as a morphological trait in varietal description.

The waxy bloom on gooseberries is a biological characteristic of the cultivar and is assessed visually on a scale ranging from absent to strongly expressed. This trait influences the appearance of the fruits, giving them a matte finish, and helps reduce moisture evaporation during storage, which has a positive effect on the shelf life and transportability of the berries.

In agronomic practice, it is important to differentiate the natural cuticular bloom from the symptoms of American gooseberry mildew. Unlike the normal waxy layer, the fungal disease manifests as a loose powdery coating, which requires agrotechnical plant protection measures.
