Cucumber Anthracnose

Cucumis sativus L.

A fungal disease of cucumber caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum orbiculare, affecting all above-ground plant organs throughout the growing season. The disease manifests as sunken spots and ulcers, leading to fruit deformation, seedling damping-off, and stem death.

The causal agent of anthracnose is the fungus Colletotrichum orbiculare, belonging to the class Ascomycetes. In breeding practice, strains of varying virulence are used to identify pathotypes, and in international nomenclature, resistance to this disease is coded with the letter designation Co.

Symptoms on leaves appear as water-soaked spots that enlarge over time, turning copper-brown in color, often followed by the formation of holes and a pinkish film. Elongated sunken spots occur on stems and petioles, leading to thinning and stem breakage, while fruits become covered with "weeping" ulcers, deform, and develop a bitter taste.

Accessions with moderate resistance, such as PI 197085, 197087, and 197088, are used as breeding material for developing resistant lines. When seedlings are infected, the pathogen localizes in the root collar area, which triggers damping-off and plant death.
