The assessment of herbicide tolerance in pea is carried out using a visual method on a scale of 1 to 5, where 1 point corresponds to high tolerance, and 5 points to plant death or severe suppression. For breeding purposes, quantitative indicators are applied, including the measurement of shoot dry mass, analysis of photosystem II efficiency via chlorophyll fluorescence, and comparative yield assessment in treated plots.
The sensitivity of pea to chemicals depends on the growth stage: the application of herbicides outside the 5–6 leaf stage is critical, as the waxy bloom on the leaves provides natural protection during this period. Varietal differences in response to preparations have also been identified, linked to plant morphotype: for example, semi-leafless (afila) forms may show increased sensitivity to MCPA-based herbicides.
