Herbicide Resistance in Rice

Technological resistance in rice characterizes the ability of a variety to tolerate chemical treatments to which standard lines are sensitive. The level of resistance is assessed by morphological and physiological indicators, including changes in plant height, biomass accumulation, and photosynthetic pigment content. As a quantitative metric, a resistance index is used, defined as the ratio of the herbicide dose causing a 50 percent reduction in biomass in the test variety to the corresponding value in a sensitive control.

In rice agronomy, the problem of weed resistance, particularly in Echinochloa species, to applied herbicides, especially ALS inhibitors, is also critical. The intensive use of the same products leads to the selection of resistant biotypes, which can reduce rice yields by 85 percent. An additional environmental risk when cultivating herbicide-resistant varieties is the probability of horizontal gene transfer of resistance to weedy red rice, which forms hard-to-eradicate populations of superweeds.
