When evaluating rice varieties, plant height is measured in the field as the distance from the soil surface to the tip of the panicle. This indicator is a critical factor determining the lodging resistance of crops under the weight of the harvest: there is a direct correlation where an increase in stem height reduces the plant's resistance to this phenomenon.
Modern rice breeding aims to optimize stem height to increase the harvest index of photosynthesis, ensuring that the plant's resources are primarily directed toward grain formation. Varieties with an excessively large height, in some cases reaching up to 1.5 meters, are less suitable for mechanized harvesting due to the high risk of lodging and difficulties in combine operation.
