Modern rice breeding aims to optimize stem height to increase the harvest index of photosynthesis, ensuring that the plant's resources are primarily directed toward grain formation. Varieties with an excessively large height, in some cases reaching up to 1.5 meters, are less suitable for mechanized harvesting due to the high risk of lodging and difficulties in combine operation.
