The variety is an aromatic black rice. It is commercially available as the Nero Penelope product, as well as in the Penelope Rosa version — a semi-processed rice capable of changing color to pink when interacting with acidic ingredients during the cooking process.

Detailed agronomic and morphological characteristics, such as maturity group, plant height, disease resistance, or breeding origin, are absent from open publications.
