The primary triggering factors include water stress, calcium antagonism with other nutrients such as potassium, magnesium, sodium, and ammonium nitrogen, as well as high air temperatures that inhibit transpiration. Low soil pH levels also reduce calcium availability to the plant's root system.

The disorder manifests strictly at the blossom end of the fruit as a water-soaked spot, which eventually becomes sunken, dark, and dry. Hybrids with elongated fruit shapes and large-fruited varieties are the most susceptible, as they require more intensive nutrient transport to the areas of the fruit furthest from the stem.
