Waxy bloom — cauliflower

Brassica oleracea L. (Cauliflower Group)

An important morphological trait in cauliflower, evaluated in breeding programs visually using a scoring scale. It provides protection against pests, pathogens, and ultraviolet radiation, and reduces moisture loss.

In cauliflower breeding practice, the intensity of the waxy bloom on leaves is classified as absent, weak, moderate, or strong expression of the trait. For research purposes, the wax concentration, which is approximately 0.15–0.18% of the fresh leaf weight, can be determined by gas chromatography.

A high density of the wax layer physically hinders the movement of flea beetles and stink bugs, and prevents leaf wetting, thereby limiting the development of fungal and bacterial infections. Wax synthesis is a dynamic process: it increases at temperatures below 15 °C and decreases as they rise, acting as a transpiration barrier and protection against excessive UV radiation.
