Drought tolerance of maize

The ability of a maize genotype to maintain productivity and viability under moisture deficit conditions, particularly critical 10-14 days before flowering and during the 20 days thereafter.

The evaluation of maize drought tolerance includes laboratory methods for seed germination in sucrose solutions (9–12 atm) with analysis of radicle length, sprout length, and tolerance indices. Field diagnostics are based on comparison with regional standards regarding plant height, number of productive ears, 1000-kernel weight, and harvest moisture.

Moisture deficiency during critical growth stages of maize leads to the abortion of ear primordia, a reduction in their size, and a decrease in total grain yield. Highly tolerant genotypes are considered those that demonstrate the lowest degree of growth depression under stress conditions compared to the standards.
