Winter protection for carrots

When sowing in late autumn, the objective of covering is thermal insulation and the creation of a barrier for the seeds. After sowing, the beds are covered with a soil mixture and mulched with plant residues; in the spring, spunbond is applied, which serves not only to protect against late frosts but also creates a physical barrier against the carrot rust fly.

Leaving root crops in the soil for the winter requires hilling and covering them with spruce branches or sand to improve drainage and prevent rot. This method is applicable only in the presence of a stable snow cover, as the carrot, being a biennial plant, is vulnerable to waterlogging and the risk of regrowth during thaws.
