Winter protection of grapevine

Successful overwintering of grapes depends on the preliminary hardening of the vine at temperatures down to -8°C and ensuring a dry environment under the cover. To protect the aerial parts, a dry shelter with an air gap, soil covering, or combined methods using permeable materials are employed to prevent condensation buildup and the development of fungal diseases.

The grapevine root system requires protection if the soil freezes below -7°C, which is achieved by mulching the root zone with organic matter. Agrotechnical practices necessarily include dismantling the tying system and bending the vines toward the ground, while frost resistance is directly determined by the quality of wood maturation during the growing season.
