The vines of the variety are characterized as medium-vigorous. The leaves are small, five-lobed, and dark green in color. The clusters have a conical or cylindrical-conical shape and medium density. The berries are small or medium, colored black and covered with a thick waxy bloom.
The variety possesses relative resistance to powdery mildew, while being prone to flower drop and millerandage. Shoot maturation is good. The variety is characterized by a high content of tannins, acids, and coloring substances in the juice, which provides wines with significant aging potential.
This is an ancient variety, most widespread in the Portuguese regions of Dão and Douro. Since the end of the 20th century, large-scale clonal selection has been carried out, as a result of which about 197 clones have been identified to increase productivity and crop quality.
