The variety is a product of a natural cross between the varieties Touriga Nacional and Malvasia Fina (also known as Arinto do Dão). It has the synonyms Tinta Coimbra, Touriga Brasileira, and Tourigo Fêmea. In Portugal, the variety is considered rare, with a planted area of less than 40 hectares.
In terms of maturity, Touriga Fêmea is a mid-season variety with average timing for the start of the growing season. The berry composition shows a high concentration of carotenoids and certain terpenols, which gives wines a floral aromatic profile and contributes to their elegance.
The variety is protected under genetic diversity conservation programs due to its past threat of extinction. It is genetically distinct from the Touriga Nacional variety, despite the similarity in names.
