The variety is an interspecific hybrid obtained by crossing the varieties 'Ramsey' (Vitis champinii) and 'Schwarzmann' (V. riparia × V. rupestris). It is a professional tool used as a root system for grapevine grafting for operation in nematode-infested soils.

The plant is characterized by low vigor, which allows it to be used in soils with high fertility potential and in high-density plantings. The variety does not cause excessive potassium accumulation in the scion, contributing to the maintenance of a balanced juice pH, and demonstrates good graft take.

RS-9 possesses a wide spectrum of resistance to nematodes, including root-knot nematodes and Xiphinema index, as well as to phylloxera. At the same time, the variety exhibits sensitivity to ring nematodes.
