The variety was previously known as Tocai rosso, but since 2007 it has been officially named Tai rosso. Genetically it is identical to Spanish Garnacha, French Grenache, and Sardinian Cannonau. The variety is considered autochthonous to the Berici Hills in the province of Vicenza, where it has been cultivated for centuries.
The leaves of the variety are medium, rounded, and three-lobed. The clusters are medium, pyramidal, compact, often with wings. The berries are medium-sized, slightly oval, blue-violet in color, with a thick bloom and thick skin. It is a late-ripening variety that requires heat and light.
Wines from Tai rosso have a ruby-red color and an intense aroma with notes of cherry, raspberry, blackberry, rose, violet, and black pepper. The taste is characterized as full and soft, with delicate tannins and freshness.
