Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety is autochthonous to Spain and is grown primarily in the Castilla-La Mancha region. It has many historical synonyms, such as Benitillo, Blasco, Desgranaera, Graciano de Alfaro, and others. Visually, the vine and fruit resemble the Tempranillo variety, but Tinto Velasco berries are larger.

It is classified as a late-ripening variety requiring a long growing season; the vines may remain on the bush until the end of October or early November. The variety is sensitive to water conditions. In winemaking, it is used to produce red dry wines with high aging potential, possessing balsamic and floral notes.
