Variety description

10 August 2026

The name Tinto Basto is used in various regions of Spain and Portugal as an alternative designation for the Garnacha variety, and in some cases, for the Tinto Velasco variety. The term is descriptive in nature, where Tinto signifies red color, and Basto refers to characteristics of the vine or berries in local terminology.

A separate description of morphological traits for Tinto Basto does not exist, as it is not a bred variety. When using this name in planting material documents, genetic clarification is required, as various autochthonous grape varieties may be hidden under it.
