The variety is autochthonous; its origin is linked to Spain, Greece, or Sardinia. The bush is characterized by a drooping habit. The plant is considered difficult to cultivate: it is sensitive to powdery mildew, thrips, leafhoppers, and is prone to magnesium deficiency.
Yields are unstable and low. Heavy bunches form, which can cause bending of shoots and berry drop. The variety prefers warm and dry soils and responds well to short pruning. The main modern plantings are concentrated in Sardinia.
Wines from this variety possess good structure and are characterized by aromas of apple, pear, and white plum, as well as mineral and smoky undertones. It is known by the synonyms Torbato and Malvoisie du Roussillon.
