The variety is of ancient European origin, with the South Tyrol region considered its probable homeland. It is a technical variety intended for the production of high-quality white wines that possess high extractivity and aromas of tea rose, honey, ripe fruits, and spices.
The ripening period is medium to late. The vines have medium to strong vigor and have dark green, rounded, slightly lobed leaves. The bunches are small, dense, and conical in shape. The berries are small, rounded, with firm skin, and the color varies from pale pink to reddish-gray.
The variety possesses some frost resistance but is sensitive to spring frosts due to early bud break. It is relatively resistant to powdery mildew and grey mold, and is susceptible to European grapevine moth infestation. It prefers sunny sites with fertile soils and tolerates drought poorly.
The variety is prone to accumulating a high sugar level with a gradual decrease in acidity. Winemakers often use it for producing wines with residual sugar, as dry versions without sufficient acidity can be insufficiently expressive.
