The variety is ancient and known under a multitude of synonyms, including Savagnin Rose, Roter Traminer and Klevener de Heiligenstein. Externally, the berries have a pink or reddish skin hue; however, the variety belongs to the white wine category as it does not contain deep dark pigments.

The plant belongs to the early maturity group. The variety is sensitive to frost and prone to flower abscission, as well as susceptible to downy mildew, powdery mildew and grey mold. Wine profiles from this variety are closer to Savagnin Blanc than to Gewürztraminer due to the absence of pronounced muscat aromatics.
