The variety is of French origin and is a natural hybrid of Prunelard and Magdeleine Noire des Charentes. The vines are medium-growing with hermaphroditic flowers and good shoot maturation. The bunches are predominantly small or medium, conical in shape, and vary in density. The berries are dark blue, covered with a waxy bloom, and have juicy pulp.
The yield of the variety is unstable and susceptible to weather factors. MAL'BEK shows low resistance to downy mildew, gray mold, and anthracnose, and medium resistance to powdery mildew. The variety is sensitive to low temperatures and spring frosts. Wine quality strongly depends on the terroir, while the grapes have a high juice yield of up to 90%.
