The variety belongs to the "Greek" group of grapes, historically associated with ancient Greek settlers in Southern Italy. It is used exclusively for the production of red wines and most often serves as a component of blends in DOC wines, such as Bivongi, Lamezia, Terre di Cosenza, Donnici, and Verbicaro.
The leaf is medium-sized, wedge-shaped or rounded, entire or three-lobed. The cluster is medium-sized, conical, and of moderate density. The berries are black, from medium to small in size, obovate in shape, with thin, firm skin covered with a waxy bloom.
The variety is late-ripening. Wines produced from it are characterized by a ruby-red color and a harmonious taste with vinous notes. Previously, the variety was mistakenly confused with Marcigliana, Aleatico, and Verdicchio Nero, however, modern research has confirmed its distinctiveness; the name Maglioccone is used as a local synonym in the Bivongi area.
