The variety is native to the central part of Spain and was historically mentioned in documents of the XV–XVI centuries. Malvar is used to create white wines, including barrel-aged variants. In some regions, it may be found under the name Lairén, however, it is genetically distinct from the Airén variety.
The plant belongs to late-ripening varieties; the berries acquire a golden color by mid-October. The variety is productive, although irregular fruit set has been historically noted. It is traditionally cultivated on mountain plateaus at an altitude of 600 to 730 meters above sea level.
Wines from this variety possess a full-bodied structure, moderate to high acidity, and a vibrant character. The aromatics are dominated by notes of fennel, anise, citrus, stone fruits, and wild herbs; aging reveals shades of honey, almond, and dried fruits.
