Downy mildew of grapevine

A fungal disease of grapevines caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola. It affects all green parts of the plant, causing necrosis and premature drying of inflorescences and berries.

The causal agent of the disease is the obligate parasite Plasmopara viticola. The pathogen infects all green tissues of the plant. Characteristic oily spots appear on the upper side of the leaves, and under high humidity, a whitish sporulation coating develops on the underside, after which the tissues become necrotic.

Infection of inflorescences leads to browning and drying, and young berries at the pea stage darken and die off. On shoots, the disease manifests as longitudinal spots and curvature of the tips, known as the shepherd's crook. In breeding, resistance to the pathogen is associated with Rpv loci, such as Rpv3, as well as Pva and Pvr genes identified in American and Amur grapevine species.
