A wine variety originating from the Rhine region of Germany. Genetically, it is the result of a natural cross between the Gouais blanc variety and an unknown descendant of Traminer. The growing season from bud burst to harvest maturity lasts 148–160 days.
The vines have strong or medium vigor with semi-spreading shoots. Leaves are round, three- or five-lobed, with a characteristic funnel shape and rugosity. Clusters are small or medium, weighing 80–100 g, cylindrical or cylindrical-conical in shape, with a dense or loose structure.
Berries are medium-sized, round, greenish-white with a golden hue and dark spots, covered with a thin but strong skin. The yield of the variety is low. The variety is prone to flower and ovary shedding and berry shot/millerandage.
Rizling rýnsky possesses good winter hardiness, but is characterized by low resistance to phylloxera, powdery mildew (Oidium), and bacterial blight. The variety is highly susceptible to grey mold (Botrytis cinerea), while resistance to downy mildew (Plasmopara viticola) is relatively higher than in many other varieties.
