The variety, also known by the synonym Aspiran Noir, originates from the Languedoc region in southern France and has been known since 1544. Genetic studies have revealed its connection with the Cinsaut variety. Color mutations of the variety are known: white, gray, pink, and Verdal.
The plant belongs to low-yielding varieties, is sensitive to frost, and is prone to downy mildew, powdery mildew, and gray mold. Before the phylloxera infestation, the variety was widespread in Languedoc, however, it is currently extremely rare.
