The rootstock vine Riparia portalis, also known as Riparia Gloire de Montpellier, is one of the oldest forms selected from the species Vitis riparia. It is used exclusively as a rootstock for grafting Vitis vinifera varieties to protect roots from phylloxera.
The plant possesses resistance to phylloxera and frost hardiness, however, it is characterized by low vigor. The vine does not tolerate soils with a high content of active lime well, on which it frequently displays signs of chlorosis.
In modern industrial viticulture, the use of this form is limited due to its sensitivity to calcareous soils and low vigor, as a result of which it is giving way to more adaptive hybrid rootstocks.
