The causal agent of the disease is the oomycete Plasmopara viticola, which infects all green parts of the vine. Unlike susceptible Vitis vinifera cultivars, these North American species and their hybrids are capable of effectively limiting pathogen development due to hypersensitive response mechanisms and other defense reactions.
Genetic control of downy mildew resistance in these hybrids is mediated through quantitative trait loci (QTLs) of the Rpv series. Specifically, in the study of populations involving V. rupestris, the Rpv28 locus was identified, which is used as a marker in breeding programs to evaluate the donor properties of these species.
