Grafting and Budding — Vitis berlandieri Planch x Vitis rupestris Scheele

Hybrid forms of Vitis berlandieri x Vitis rupestris used as rootstocks exhibit low rooting rates for hardwood cuttings, which is a significant technological limitation. The success of the grafting process on these rootstocks depends directly on the anatomical characteristics of the wood, including vessel size and xylem structure, as well as the physiological status of the shoots.

These rootstocks are used to increase resistance to phylloxera and to adapt to soils with high active lime content at a pH above 7. In commercial practice, it is preferable to use machine omega grafting for these combinations, followed by stratification to stimulate callus formation and ensure tissue union.
