Ovary shedding is a biologically determined process in which the vine discards inflorescence elements incapable of full development. The tendency for this phenomenon is noticeably higher in varieties with a functionally female flower type, which requires the use of pollinator varieties to increase yield.

The shattering of ripe berries is a negative varietal trait that reduces the transportability and shelf life of grapes. In addition to genetic characteristics, this phenomenon is often triggered by physiological metabolic disorders known as rachis necrosis, as well as by pathogen infection or deficiencies in nutrient elements such as potassium and magnesium.

To assess ovary shedding in ampelography, the gauze insulator method is used, which allows for counting the number of fallen buds and ovaries relative to the total volume of the inflorescence. In agricultural practice, management of this process is achieved through proper shoot thinning, optimization of the water regime, and the creation of conditions for high-quality pollination.
