The variety is autochthonous to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and border areas of Slovenia. According to genetic studies, it is the result of a natural crossing of the variety Vulpea with an unknown parent. Externally, the variety is distinguished by rounded, deeply lobed five-lobed leaves and medium or small cylindrical-conical bunches with small, rounded, dark blue berries with a waxy bloom.
The plant belongs to the mid-late ripening group and is characterized by average yield. The variety exhibits susceptibility to downy mildew, is prone to berry shatter and uneven berry ripening, which requires careful maintenance. Wines made from this variety possess intense color, a pronounced tannin structure, and aromas of spices, leather, violet, and wild berries.
