The variety is autochthonous to the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region and the border areas of Slovenia. It is used for the production of red wines, which are characterized by intense color, good structure, fresh acidity, and aromas of violet, forest berries, and green pepper.

The flower of the variety is bisexual. The leaf is round, five-lobed, deeply cut, with a closed petiole sinus. The cluster is cylindrical-conical in shape, medium or small in size, and of medium density. The berry is small, round, dark blue, with a thick waxy bloom and juicy flesh.

The ripening period of the variety is medium-late, yield is average. The variety is susceptible to downy mildew, prone to millerandage and sunburn. It requires careful selection of growing conditions, as in lowland conditions the quality of the wine may decrease.
