The variety belongs to the species Vitis vinifera and originates from the Vipava Valley region. Due to the rarity of its distribution and the age of the plantings, the variety is susceptible to viral diseases, which is why breeding centers are working on sanitation and searching for resistant forms that require less chemical treatment.
This variety is a wine grape and is used to create wines with authentic characteristics. In commercial winemaking, it is sometimes used in blends, for example in the production of sparkling wines. Genetic studies have confirmed that various biotypes, previously incorrectly identified as other varieties, may be hidden under the name Poljšakica.
