The name "Samba" appears in European Union archival documents from 1998 as an onion hybrid. This name is also recorded in agricultural seed lists in South Africa, where it is associated with the seed supplier Starke Ayres.

Open publications contain no data confirming a link between the "Samba" onion variety and the breeding activities of Limagrain, which specializes primarily in field crops.
