The variety Gros plat d'Italie, which translates as "Large flat Italian," is an heirloom type of red onion. The bulbs have a characteristic flat shape.
Due to its flavor qualities, this onion is traditionally used fresh, particularly in salads. The variety was widely known in European agronomic literature as early as the 19th and early 20th centuries.
