Variety description

10 August 2026

Makói is the result of centuries of folk selection and is grown in the region of the city of Makó. Plants have a short vegetation period and have historically been cultivated as both a biennial and annual crop. The variety type is adapted to a hot and dry climate.

The bulbs have a predominantly round shape with a thin closed neck. The outer scales are dense, bronze-brown or bronze-red in color. The bulb flesh is white, characterized by high density and an intense, pungent, spicy taste.

A high dry matter content ensures the produce has excellent transportability and long storage life. Within the framework of the protected designation, a number of specific varieties are distinguished, such as Makói bronz, Makói CR, and Csanád.
