New Mexico yellow grano

Terminated

Allium cepa L. Onion · Vegetables

Variety description

10 August 2026

The variety was developed at the New Mexico Agricultural Experiment Station based on Babosa-type seeds introduced from Spain. The bulbs have a rounded shape characteristic of the Grano type. The plant belongs to the sweet onion group and was historically valued for its early maturity.

Agronomic characteristics note the variety's susceptibility to certain foliar diseases. The variety has limited resistance to pink root rot and bolting, which served as a basis for further breeding work to improve these traits. In terms of keeping quality, the variety is inferior to modern breeding achievements.
