The Vacoa variety is a traditional crop of Réunion Island. In the 2000s, a complex of works was carried out to sanitize planting material from Onion Yellow Dwarf Virus and Leek Yellow Stripe Virus using meristem culture and in vitro micropropagation methods.

The plant is adapted to the tropical conditions of the region and is valued in local cuisine as a type of "ail péi" garlic. The use of sanitized material allows for the restoration of productivity and a reduction in the risk of crop losses caused by viral pathogens.
