The Mateus I variety is grown on the island of Madeira and is part of the group of varieties that form the basis of Anona da Madeira production. The variety is used to produce fruits intended for fresh consumption, as well as for preparing desserts and juices.
Studies of the biochemical composition of Mateus I fruits confirm a high content of phenolic compounds, including flavan-3-ols (catechin, epicatechin) and kaurane-type diterpenes. Like other cherimoya varieties, the variety is sensitive to low temperatures and requires specific climatic conditions.
