The variety belongs to the inermis botanical variety and is distinguished by the absence of a tough hull on the grain. It is used as an object for evaluating powdery mildew resistance and as a standard in comparative studies in Central Europe.

Grain quality of the Abel variety includes an increased content of amino acids, in particular lysine and arginine. Due to the absence of hulls, the variety is in demand in the food industry for dietary nutrition and in feed production, where hulless grain improves the digestibility of feed for livestock and poultry.
