The Rhea variety is breeding material of French origin, developed by the National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA). Its pedigree is linked to a combination of the parental forms RHEA and PENIARTH. The variety is classified as hulless oats (nuda).

In studies conducted in the early 2000s, the variety's productivity under organic farming conditions was noted. As part of comparative trials on nutritional value, a dependency of grain quality on yield levels was established: lower yield indicators correlated with higher concentrations of substances in the grain.
