The variety is adapted to northern growing conditions, particularly in Scandinavia. When processing hulled grain, it can exhibit a specific taste and bitterness; analyses of its phenolic compound content, including avenanthramides, have been conducted.

Seed germination of the variety is highly dependent on soil moisture: it is low under waterlogged conditions and normal under limited moisture. Historically, the variety has been noted as resistant to grey speck. It is traditionally used as a fodder crop and as a cover crop when establishing perennial grasses.
