The variety was created by crossing Flämingsvita with a breeding line from New Zealand. In the history of breeding, Winston was used to develop such varieties as Flämingstip and Husky.

The plant possesses resistance to powdery mildew at the adult stage, as well as partial resistance to crown rust and smut. In scientific research, the variety serves as a subject for studying grain quality indicators as breeding material.
