The variety is used in agricultural practice mainly as green manure. Black oat differs from common oats in grain structure, which is closer in characteristics to wild cereal grasses.

The plant possesses a developed root system, which contributes to the improvement of soil structure. The variety is used to reduce the population of harmful nematodes, in particular Pratylenchus penetrans, and is distinguished by its lack of fastidiousness regarding sowing dates.
